Looking for some great asthma videos to help you breathe better?\n\nThere's no shortage of books and articles out there for treating asthma - we're hoping that our asthma blog is a valuable contribution to that field! \n\nBut sometimes, there's no substitution for some visual guidance. I turn to the following asthma videos again and again to help me keep my symptoms under control (I barely use my ventolin anymore!). \n\nThese asthma videos quick and of course free on Youtube, so I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do. \n\nAnd if you'd like to take your at-home asthma treatment further, don't miss these 6 strategies I used to get off albuterol.\nAsthma Videos for Better Breathing\nI'm going to start with one of my favorite practices for improving my asthma symptoms, and my health. Alternate nostril breathing is a great way to reduce your stress. Plus because it takes a lot of concentration on something that is actually pretty simple, it's kind of like a meditation hack - I dare your mind to wander! \n\nThis video is great to add to your daily routine, or to keep in your back pocket for the next time you're feeling stressed and\/or trying to sit through asthma symptoms without taking a puff (what I call 'pausing the puffer').\u00a0\n\nSimilarly, I love this next video, because it illustrates what I find so great about Buteyko. \n\nWe know scientifically that stress causes asthma flareups. And it's well established that meditation can reduce stress (along with a whole host of other mental and physical health benefits). \n\nSince Buteyko exercises, especially like this one, are meditative and calming, they're a win-win. That's because they double as meditation. \n\nI believe that Buteyko ideas can help treat asthma symptoms, but even if you don't share my belief, you'll benefit from this exercise.\n\nThis exercise is a 10 minute, super relaxing meditation that simply asks you to try to breathe a little less. Especially if you're new to Buteyko (or on the fence about it), just commit to doing this exercise everyday for 2 weeks. I bet you'll start to crave how relaxed it makes you feel.\n\n\nVideos For Relaxing\nWe asthmatics all know intuitively that stress triggers and worsens asthma, and the science back us up on this (source). The correlation between our mental and physical health is complex, but clear. That\u2019s why I think stress reduction in general should be one of our major goals as we try to manage our asthma symptoms. \n\nAnd yoga is another great way to calm yourself down when you feel asthma symptoms creeping up. Plus, it has been shown to statistically reduce asthmatics\u2019 dependency on rescue inhaler drugs as well as day and night asthma symptoms (source). That's why this accessible Calming Practice is one of my favorite asthma videos around.\u00a0\n\nThis video is meant for all levels, even ultra yoga beginners. If you've been wanting to try yoga, it's a great place to start.\nGuided Sleep Video\n\nIf you follow my blog, you know that I have a simple sleep strategy that helps me avoid nighttime asthma symptoms. If your asthma is worse at night, I highly suggest you check it out.\u00a0\n\nGetting a good night's sleep is so important for our health. I know that when I sleep better, I breathe better too. There are almost countless sleep relaxation videos like this on Youtube - check out this one, and then try to find one that works for you. And find more sleep hygiene tips here.\u00a0\nStart Exercising With These YouTube Channels\n\nMy wife, Emma, is a yogi. I am not. But, as discussed above, yoga is often recommended as part of a complimentary, alternative treatment system. \n\nAnd again, more and more research is showing us how healthy and positive a safe yoga practice can be. So why not try it?\n\nWell, for many, the answer to 'why not try it' is that yoga can be intimidating. That's why, thanks to Emma's suggestion, I've come to love Yoga with Adriene. \n\nAdriene has created and shared dozens (if not hundreds) of free yoga videos, and they're all fun, light, and approachable. This isn't a super-serious practice, and she offers lots of videos and instructions aimed at beginners.\n\nYoga should be accessible, not scary, and this quick video is very accessible. Emma also informs me it's a great intro because 'sun salutations' are core part of yoga. I know that it's relatively short, invigorating, and gets me practicing breath control. \n\nSo if you're considering using yoga to help treat asthma but don't know where to start, this is would be a great place.\n\nAnd if you're looking to kick your work outs up a notch, we also like Fitness Blender's YouTube channel. Just like with Yoga with Adriene, the Fitness Blender team offer hundreds of work out videos for free. They cover a wide variety of workouts, from cardio to pilates to HIIT to strengh training. And their videos are also flexible - they're great whether you're just starting out, or already a gym rat. Highly recommended! \n\nFinally, while we're on the topic of exercising, I would be remiss if I didn't add that I've found rowing to be the best exercise to do with my asthma - here's why.\u00a0\nBonus Video: Unblock Your Nose This Way!\n\nNasal issues are a common complaint for people with asthma - they certainly are for me. And nasal spray addiction is quite nasty - I've suffered from it, and it's not fun. \n\nThankfully, there's a Buteyko exercise that often works for me.
